Two kinds of thinking help us make sense of the world: exploration and exploitation. To problem-solve, adults exploit what they already know about the world. Teenagers and pre-schoolers are most likely to access exploration as a way to problem solve. Adults want speed and we rely on previously tested solutions. Exploration, trying something new, may lead us to a new and unusual piece of knowledge. Knowledge we can file away for later, when we need to problem solve something new!
